About the Founder

Emma Hutchinson
Founder & Independent Workplace Investigator
Emma is an experienced workplace investigator with a background spanning criminal justice, ombudsman investigations, public-sector legal practice and leading a workplace investigations function in the private sector. She specialises in sensitive and complex issues including sexual harassment, discrimination, whistleblowing, misconduct and workplace culture concerns. Her approach is calm, impartial and grounded in trauma-informed practice. She focuses on ensuring that every person involved is treated with dignity and psychological safety.
Emma began her legal career with the Crown Prosecution Service, progressing from administrative support to Senior Crown Prosecutor and Solicitor-Advocate. She specialised in rape and serious sexual offences (RASSO), domestic abuse, child protection, fraud and other high-risk criminal work. This experience strengthened her judgement and interviewing skills and gave her the ability to manage emotionally charged cases under scrutiny. This now underpins her sensitive and evidence-based approach to workplace investigations.
She later prosecuted in the Cayman Islands as Crown Counsel before joining the Office of the Ombudsman as a Senior Investigator. She carried out impartial investigations into whistleblowing and maladministration complaints and produced clear and evidence-led reports aimed at improving fairness and practice. While working there, she completed formal mediation training.
In the private sector, Emma established and led the workplace investigations function for a national employer. She oversaw complex misconduct and harassment cases and developed clear and structured processes for managing sensitive concerns. She has also held senior roles in public-sector legal teams. All legal work is undertaken separately from Independent Workplace Investigations.
Emma currently holds independent legal and governance appointments, including serving as a Legally Qualified Person in police misconduct hearings and as an Independent Member of an Audit and Governance Committee. These appointments are entirely separate from Independent Workplace Investigations Limited.
Emma founded Independent Workplace Investigations Limited to give organisations access to a trusted external specialist who can offer balanced analysis, accessible reporting and a clear and dignified process from start to finish.
All legal advisory work forms part of Emma’s regulated legal practice and is entirely distinct from the services offered by Independent Workplace Investigations Limited.
